With my mother-in-law Setsuko in 2012, visiting family in Japan.
About
I work in both traditional and digital mediums and specialise in hand-cut collages and illustration.
I came to collage via my cut & paste background. In the days before digital design, I used a scalpel, ruler, wax, a Rotring pen and photo mechanical transfer to build designs. Collage poses the challenge of making an image from disparate materials, re-mixing/sampling them to create something with a new and unique narrative.
Through illustration I explore my love of public transport, myth, music, geometry and sport.
The Japanese influence in my work comes from my family: my partner has dual Japanese & English heritage and we’ve visited many times soaking up the architecture, graphic design, typography and hijiki. Sadly my mother-in-law Setsuko (pictured) passed away a few years ago ... we wish we could be at the Karatsu Kunchi together, eating that とうもろこし/tomorokoshi/corn once again!
I play badminton, bowls, basketball, backgammon, table tennis, pool and draughts.
